Nykaa is a young company but Falguni Nayar herself has been a force in the Indian business world for more than two decades. A graduate of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, she spent the bulk of her career—over 18 years—at Kotak Mahindra Capital Co. When she left in 2012, she was the managing director and head of its institutional equities business. But, she says, “I have always been an entrepreneur first.”
Founded in April 2012, Nykaa started as a multi-brand online beauty retailer but has since extended its presence through a mobile app and brick-and-mortar stores. Think of it as India’s Sephora (the French multi-brand cosmetics retailer). At present, Nykaa has four stores, one each in Delhi and Bengaluru and two in Mumbai. To go pan-India, it plans to open one store every month from next year.
Nayar was born and raised in Mumbai, where her father ran a small bearings company, assisted by her mother. The household chatter revolved around investments, the stock market and trade. “Plus, I’m Gujarati,” she deadpans. Entrepreneurship is in her blood.
Why did she name the company Nykaa? “Because nayika means you are the actress of your life,” she says, smiling.
A lot of Leadership is a Private Journey of some hard-hitting decision making. Do you agree?
At Nykaa, we have developed a system of decision making where all relevant stake give their opinion, and the majority wins. We have all ages, from millennials to C-suite, genders, professions – designers, engineers, business teams, discussing their opinions. I find that in this way, everyone gets an equal voice, and also I get to understand different points of view. Of course, it the case of the deadlock, I do make a decision.
Were there any important mentors or influencers in your life that led you to your current position?
Perhaps first my parents, who never let me, believe in boundaries, they always encouraged me to pursue my goals. I’ve honed my professional skills observing my husband, Sanjay Nayar, over these years and my children remain a constant source of inspiration. Working with Uday Kotak for over 20 years allowed me to learn firsthand some very strong leadership skills.
How do you think being a woman impacts your leadership style?
I always considering myself first a professional and a leader. The goal of any leader is to keep their team motivated towards running a strong business. This means keeping a constant ear to the ground, understanding every aspect of your business and making sure you and your team stay on the right path.
What will be the biggest challenge for the generation of women behind you? What advice would you give a young woman starting out in her career?
Focus on skills like negotiating and networking that will help you advance in your career. Don’t be afraid to lean in. You are capable of far more than you think.
A woman anchor in your life you would dedicate this interview too?
Two perhaps, my mother and my daughter who always cheer me on.
फाल्गुनी नायर
फाल्गुनी नायर यांनी २०१२ मध्ये ‘नायका’ नावाने ई कॉमर्स कंपनीचा पाया रचला. या कंपनीच्या माध्यमातून त्यांनी ब्युटी, मेकअप, पर्सनल केअर आणि वेलनेसशी संबंधित प्रॉडक्टची विक्री सुरू केली. नायकाचं लोकप्रिय मोबाईल अॅपही आहे, या अॅपवरून मल्टी ब्रँड ब्युटी प्रॉडक्टची विक्री मोठ्या प्रमाणावर होते. फ्रान्समधल्या लोकप्रिय ‘सोफ्रा’ ब्युटी प्रॉडक्टच्या ब्रँडची बरोबरी भारतातील नायका ब्रँड करत आहे असं म्हटल्यास काही वावगं ठरणार नाही. सध्या नायकाचे चार मोठे स्टोअर असून यापैकी एक दिल्ली आणि बंगळूरूमध्ये तर दोन मुंबईमध्ये आहेत. एवढंच नाही तर पुढच्या वर्षीपासून प्रत्येक महिन्यात एक नवीन स्टोअर सुरू करण्याचा त्यांचा मनोदय आहे.
नायका ही नवीन कंपनी असली तरी फाल्गुनी नायर यांच्या धडाडीच्या कर्तृत्वामुळे जागतिक व्यावसायिक पातळीवर या कंपनीने दोन दशकाहून जास्त काळ स्वत:चं स्वतंत्र अस्तित्व निर्माण केलं आहे. अहमदाबादच्या इंडियन इन्स्टिट्यूट ऑफ मॅनेजमेंटच्या पदवीधर फाल्गुनी नायर यांनी करिअरची १८ वर्षे कोटक महिंद्रा कॅपिटलमध्ये काम केलं आहे. २०१२ मध्ये जेव्हा त्यांनी नोकरी सोडली तेव्हा त्या व्यवस्थापकीय संचालक या पदावर कार्यरत होत्या, या निर्णयाविषयी बोलताना फाल्गुनी म्हणतात, “ मी कोणतंही काम केलं तरी मी मुळात प्रथम उद्योजक आहे.”
फाल्गुनी यांचा जन्म आणि त्यांचं शिक्षण मुंबईमध्ये झालं. मुंबईमध्ये त्यांच्या वडिलांचा छोटासा बेअरिंगचा व्यवसाय होता. या व्यवसायात फाल्गुनी यांची आई सुध्दा मदत करत असे. नायर यांच्या घरात नेहमीच आर्थिक गुंतवणूक, व्यापार, शेअर मार्केटविषयी चर्चा होत असत. फाल्गुनी म्हणतात, “मी गुजराती आहे, त्यामुळे उद्योजकता माझ्या रक्तात आहे.
फाल्गुनी यांनी कंपनीचं नाव ‘नायका’ का ठेवलं हा प्रश्न त्यांना नेहमीच विचारला जातो, या शब्दाचा अर्थ आहे, “तुम्हीच तुमच्या आयुष्याचे शिल्पकार आहात” त्या हसत उत्तर देतात. फाल्गुनी नायर यांनी त्यांचे शब्द खरे करून दाखवले आहेत, यात कोणतीच शंका नाही.
असं म्हणतात की एक चांगला लीडर म्हणून आयुष्यात अनेक कठोर निर्णय घ्यावे लागतात. लीडरशीप आणि डिसिजन मेकिंग बद्दलचे तुमचे अनुभव सांगा.
‘नायका’ मध्ये निर्णय घेण्याच्या प्रक्रियेत आम्ही प्रत्येक भागधारकाचे मत विचारात घेतो आणि बहुसंख्य मतानुसार निर्णय घेतो. आमच्याकडे वय, जेन्डर, प्रोफेशन आदींमध्ये विविधता आहे आणि प्रत्येकाचे मत विचारात घेण्याची पद्धत असल्यामुळे एकाच मुद्द्यावरील अनेक मतप्रवाह आम्हाला कळतात. जर एखाद्या मुद्द्यावर एकमत नाही झाले तर अशा वेळी मी पुढाकार घेऊन निर्णय घेते.
एक ‘बिझनेस वूमन’ म्हणून घडताना तुमच्यावर सगळ्यात जास्त कोणाचा प्रभाव आहे?
माझ्या आई बाबांनी कायम मला पाठींबा दिला. मला त्यांनी नवनवीन स्वप्न पाहण्यास आणि ती पूर्ण करण्यास प्रोत्साहन दिले. माझे पती माझे व्यावसायिक गुरु आहेत. व्यवसायासाठी लागणारी सगळी मुल्ये मी त्यांच्याकडून शिकले. माझी मुले माझ्या प्रेरणेचा स्त्रोत आहेत. तसेच ‘उदय कोटक’ बरोबर केलेल्या २० वर्षाच्या कामामुळे माझ्यातील नेतृत्वगुणांचा विकास झाला.
स्त्री असल्याचा तुमच्यातील नेतृत्वशैलीवर कसा परिणाम होतो?
स्वतःचा एक स्त्री म्हणून विचार करण्याआधी मी स्वतःला एक व्यावसायिक आणि लीडर मानते. प्रत्येक लीडरचे ध्येय हे त्याच्या टीमला प्रोत्साहन देत अधिकाधिक प्रगती करणे हेच असते. तुम्हाला जर यशस्वी व्हायचे असेल तर तुम्हाला तुमच्या व्यवसायाचे बारकावे समजून घेत, व्यवसायाच्या गरजा ओळखून त्या पूर्ण करत पुढे जावे लागते.
तुमच्या मते आजच्या तरुणींपुढे काय आव्हाने आहेत? आणि तुम्ही त्यांना काय मार्गदर्शन देऊ इच्छिता?
तडजोड करण्याची वृत्ती असेल आणि जनसंपर्कात राहण्याची आवड असेल तर करिअरच्या दृष्टीने त्याचा फायदा होतो. तुम्हाला वाटते त्यापेक्षा खूप जास्त काम करण्याची क्षमता तुमच्यात असते. न घाबरता, आत्मविश्वासाने नवनवीन आव्हानांना सामोरे जा.
ही मुलाखत तुमच्या आयुष्यातील सगळ्यात प्रेरणादायी स्त्रीला समर्पित करायची असेल तर कोणाला समर्पित कराल?
माझी आई आणि माझी मुलगी! या दोघीही मला नवनवीन आव्हाने स्वीकारण्यास प्रोत्साहन देतात.
