Ashvini Yardi
A career span of 24 years in the television industry and then making a clean break to get into producing of Hindi , Marathi & Punjabi films under her banner Grazing Goat Pictures has been an amazing journey. Her first Hindi film OMG is a cult film which got super box office success. The lady has a midas touch.
Her stint in television industry has been hugely successful. She joined Zee television in 1990s. Was the first employee of the channel COLORS. Infact the name COLORS was named by Ashvini and it created history in the world of television by becoming the Number 1 channel in 9 months! Shows such as Balika Vadhu, Uttran, Laado, Big Boss and Fear Factor acquired unprecedented television viewership. To introduce shows on television that will get the desired eyeballs and the highest ratings requires the quality of being fearless and Ashvini took the risks as required. Taking ‘calculated risks’ as she likes to quote.
After taking a break from television, she is back to producing of television and web content under her banner Viniyard Films.
Woman leaders in the field of entertainment are rare and Ashvini is one of the rarest gems who has sustained and thrived in the field of Television and Films. May her tribe grow bigger and bigger!
Who were your influencers / mentor in your life?
I started my career in television almost 25 yrs ago when there not too many influencers in terms on content leaders.. Over the period of time with the exposure to the Internet and foreign shows, I started admiring people like Mark Burnett and Simon Cowell in terms of creating formats and taking them to dizzy height globally. Till then we were sitting on great ideas but restricting them to our Indian viewers and the NRIs. Subash Chandra of Zee TV is my mentor and I will always be grateful to him and the Zee Network for my journey from an intern to the channel leader.
What will be the biggest challenge for the young generation behind you? Your advise to them?
The young generation is a lot aware of the world around. They have a strong opinion on everything around. My advise for youth planning a career in the entertainment industry is to stop worrying about what the others think of you, make your own rules. Don't discard an idea because it doesn't sound big. Make it big. A soap on child marriage waa stupid idea to most when I went ahead to make it
A tough decision you needed to take as a leader?
When it comes to business there are many tough decisions taken, some to be taken in like the next 30 mins... The tough decision I had to take which is very relevant today is sexual harassment at work place. I am a team player and sacking a guy in my team for harassment of a co worker (more than 10 yrs ago ) was I won't say difficult , but a hurtful one a work place has to ensure safety for its women employees and there is no compromising on that.
Your role model?
Role models change as we enter different phases of our lives.. Over the years my role models have been Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Indra Nooyi
An accomplishment you are proud off?
As a women, we have to multi task and that's been our strength. Balancing my work and home life successfully has been my biggest accomplishment (hope my family agrees with that)
अश्विनी यार्दी
२४ वर्षांचं टेलिव्हिजन इंडस्ट्रीमधलं वलयांकित करिअर आणि त्यानंतर मराठी, हिंदी आणि पंजाबी अशा भाषांमध्ये फिल्म निर्मिती क्षेत्रात ग्रेझिंग गोट्स पिक्चर्स या कंपनीच्या माध्यमातून केलेलं मोठं काम असा अश्विनी यार्दी यांचा मनोरंजन क्षेत्रातला दीर्घ आणि यशस्वी प्रवास आहे. ‘ओह माय गाॅड’ या त्यांच्या पहिल्या हिंदी सिनेमाला बाॅक्स आॅफिसवर तुफान यश मिळालं पण त्याआधी टेलिव्हिजन मधला अश्विनी यांचा प्रवास ही कमालीचा आकर्षक आहे. १९९० मध्ये त्या ‘झी टिव्ही’ मध्ये दाखल झाल्या. कलर्स वाहिनीच्या त्या पहिल्या वहिला कर्मचारी! खरं तर वाहिनीला ‘कलर्स’ हे नाव सुद्धा त्यांनीच दिलं होतं आणि अवघ्या ९ महिन्यात कलर्स ही नंबर वन वाहिनी म्हणून लोकप्रिय झाली. बालिका वधू, लाडो, उतरन, बिग बाॅस, फिअर फॅक्टर सारख्या कलर्सच्या शोंनी शब्दश: अभूतपूर्व यश मिळवलं. असे शोज टिव्हीवर आणायला ठाम निग्रह आणि धाडस लागतं. अश्विनीकडे ते होतंच... मनोरंजनाच्या क्षेत्रात लीडर म्हणून काम करणाऱ्या महिला तसं पाहिलं तर हाताच्या बोटावर मोजण्याएवढ्या, पण अश्वीनी यांचं नाव त्यांच्यामध्ये अग्रक्रमानंच घ्यायला हवं. हात लावेन त्याचं सोनं करेन असा परिस स्पर्श लाभलेल्या अश्विनी यार्दी यांच्याविषयी आज जाणून घेणार आहोत.
तुमचे आदर्श, मेंटाॅर कोण?
पंचवीस वर्षांपूर्वी मी टेलिव्हिजनमधलं करिअर सुरु केलं तेव्हा कंटेंट लीडर म्हणून आदर्श, मेंटाॅर मानावेत एवढे लोकं नव्हते. पण इंटरनेटसारखं माध्यम आलं, त्याचून परदेशी कार्यक्रमांचा खजिना खुला झाला आणि मी मार्क बर्नेट आणि सिमाॅन काॅवेल यांचं काम फाॅलो करायला सुरवात केली. त्यांच्यामुळे मला एखादी कल्पना ग्लोबल प्रेक्षकांच्या दृष्टीने अमलात आणायचा आवाका बघायला मिळाला. तोपर्यंत आपल्याकडे कल्पना नव्हत्या असं नाही, पण आपण नेहमी भारतीय आणि फार फार तर एनआरआय प्रेक्षकांपुरताच त्या कल्पनांचा विचार करत होतो. त्या बाबतीत झी टिव्हीचे सुभाष चंद्रा हे माझे मेंटाॅर आहेत. इंटर्न पासून ते चॅनल लीडर हा प्रवास त्यांच्या प्रेरणेमुळेच शक्य झाला!
तुमच्या क्षेत्रात तुमच्या नंतरच्या पिढीतून करिअरसाठी येणाऱ्या मुलांसमोर आव्हानं काय आहेत? त्यांना तुमचा सल्ला?
आत्ताची पिढी आजुबाजूच्या जगाबद्दल सजग आहे. त्यांची प्रत्येक गोष्टीबद्दल ठाम मतं असतात. दुसऱ्यांना तुमच्या बद्दल काय वाटतं याचा विचार न करता, तुमचे स्वत:चे रुल्स असुद्या. एखादी नवीन कल्पना ‘doesn’t sound big’ म्हणून सोडून देऊ नका. बालविवाहासारख्या विषयावर बालिका वधु सारखी मालिका अशी कल्पना म्हणून मी मांडली तेव्हा अनेकांनी ती ‘doesn’t sound big’ म्हणून खोडूनच काढली होती!
तुम्हाला घ्यायला लागलेला सगळ्यात कठीण निर्णय?
व्यवसाय म्हटलं की पावलोपावली कठीण निर्णय घ्यायला लागतात. कधी तरी विचार करायला ही वेळ नसतो आणि अर्ध्या तासात एखादा मोठ्ठा निर्णय घ्यायचा असतो. तो घ्यायलाच लागतो. मी घेतलेला एक कठीण निर्णय आजच्या परिस्थितीत आवर्जून सांगण्यासारखा आहे - कामाच्या ठिकाणी सहकारी महिलेचा लैंगिक छळ केल्याबद्दल मी एका पुरुष सहकाऱ्याला कामावरुन काढून टाकलं होतं. दहा वर्षांपूर्वी, खरं तर त्यापेक्षा जुनीच गोष्ट आहे ही - पण असा निर्णय घेणं खूप अवघड होतं, पण मी तो घेतला. टीम लीडर म्हणून, माझ्या टीममधल्या प्रत्येकासाठी छान, सेफ वातावरण असणं मला तेव्हाही महत्वाचं होतं आणि आजही आहेच!
तुमचं रोल माॅडेल?
आयुष्यातल्या फेजेस बदलतात तसे रोल माॅडेल्स ही बदलतातत, पण आॅप्रा विन्फ्रे, मेरिल स्ट्रीप आणि इंद्रा नूयी या प्रत्येक टप्प्यावर मला रोल माॅडेल वाटत आल्या आहेत.
तुमच्या कुठल्या यशाचा तुम्हाला अभिमान वाटतो?
एक स्त्री म्हणून आपल्याला कायम मल्टी टास्किंग करायला लागतं. ती आपली स्ट्रेंथ आहे असं मी मानते. घर आणि करिअरचा समतोल यशस्वीपणे साधणं ही मला वाटतं माझी सगळ्यात मोठी अकंप्लिशमेंट आहे. हा बॅलन्स मी छान साधू शकले, माझ्या घरचे ही याबाबतीत माझ्याशी सहमत असतील!
