Smita is an artist. She is creative, has tons of energy, age is just a number with her, she blends with time and she is terrific RJ! Meet RJ Smita, the Programming Controller at Radio Mirchi Pune. Smita -a blogger, a Radio Jockey, a singer & a good soul.
Did you always want to become a Radio Jockey?
Way back when the FM culture started with us in our country, people were not even aware of the term RJ. All we knew were the somber AIR announcers. I came to Pune to pursue my post grads in Entomology (study of insects) and ended up getting selected as the top 12 voices in a “radio” audition here. So, I never knew that radio will shape up my career so beautifully. The medium helped me explore people, places and the music industry. In the process, when I look back, I feel glad that I could be instrumental in amplifying the Marathi music and film industry through radio to our listeners over the period of time.
What drives a Radio Jockey (RJ)?
The passion to turn on the mic button and make your listeners fall for you 😉
What is your ‘X’ factor ?
My never-give-up spirit and courage to try something new constantly.
What is the most challenging factor for a RJ?
RJing may look easy from outside, but all the fun comes with a lot of responsibility. You are responsible for all the mood shifts of your listeners and hence need to be a balanced person on air too. RJ’s should have the in born ability to connect with the mindset of their listeners from their closed studio and understand what the audience needs at that particular point of time.
Who is your role model ? (from any sphere)?
My ajoba (grandfather) who taught me simple lessons of life through his disciplined way of lifestyle. I learnt to keep my needs and wants low and look at every aspect of life in a positively.
What will you advise young talent entering in this industry?
Let me tell you, radio cannot be a 9 to 5 job. Many RJ’s have a gr8 voice, but honestly that’s not the only thing that can make them popular. If you feel you can talk well, and relate to other’s emotionally and express it equally well, the radio doors are open for you.
