Priyanka Sachdev is an artist, illustrator and visual storyteller based in Pune, India. Not limited by style, she is an Illustrator with a love for pen and paper along with working in the world of vector graphics as well. Originally a Textile Design Graduate, she further pursued a Masters in Illustration at London College of Communication, and since has been the core of the Quirk Box Design Studio, a multi disciplinary Art based design studio in Pune. Quirk Box that has always been a Fashion label with a soul of Art, having showcased at multiple seasons of Lake Fashion Week, is now a full service Design studio taking their art and aesthetic out into the world. Her personal work is heavily influenced by magical characters and stories from Indian Mythology and she hopes to bring these stories to a global stage to share them with the world.
What am I known for (Innovator, Taskmaster, Administrator, Multitasker)
I am a Perfectionist in every role I choose to play, be it professionally or in my personal life. Anyone who knows me or has worked closely with me, knows my obsessive attention to detail and my need to create the best possible outcome for every task. I am known to not stop short of putting in everything there is to achieve a certain kind of perfection in everything I do. Anything I choose to do, I work tirelessly till I ace it, call it my blessing or my curse 🙂
Pandemic made you Unlearn…
The Pandemic has been a once in many lifetimes kind of situation, that literally brought the whole world to a standstill. Industries collapsed, the economy was ruined and so many countless innocent lives were lost. I guess in a way the situation made us unlearn what we believe the norms are and reassess our goals and priorities regarding what you want your life to amount to. It made us think differently, realise how fragile life can be, how time doesn’t wait for anyone and figure out newer ways in which we can continue to adapt and evolve. Additionally, it made everyone realise that humans are capable of so much despite geographical and physical distances, making collaboration the new way forward in life.
The most important mentor/ influencers in your life and what did they teach you
The kind of work I do, professionally and in my personal illustration practice covers a wide array of styles and subjects. From the visual design language we have at Quirk Box to a heavy Mythological influence on my personal work, I have always believed that people and content you interact with at different stages of your life reflect and shape your work. My parents have always supported my choices and ambitions and encouraged me to be the best at whatever I chose to do. At a young age, they introduced me to the magical world of Indian Mythology and growing up as a Bharatanatyam dancer, I have lived and breathed those stories. These are an extremely important part of my personal practice today.
At Quirk Box, apart from being my husband and partner, Jayesh has always been a huge inspiration and influence on my life as an artist / designer and as a creative entrepreneur and business owner. I continue to be inspired by his perseverence, resilience and an honest drive to adapt, evolve and excel every single day. At every stage in life, you are lucky if you can find people to consistently inspire, teach and support you and in this case I consider myself extremely fortunate.
Perhaps to always believe in the magic, back yourself up and work hard for what you believe in and that everything meant to happen for you will come in due time. Trust the process, enjoy the process and always be authentically you.
What drives you?
The creative nature of work literally makes the sky the limit. There is no right or wrong and there is no end to how creative you can be as an artist. For me, just the endless possibilities a creative profession brings is exciting. At Quirk Box we always talk about intrinsically being an ‘Art’ label. Whether it is Art through Fashion or Lifestyle, Interiors and Brands, each project we take on from different spheres becomes a medium to showcase our art to the world. Every project is a canvas for our art. If there is no restriction on the medium or the outcome, there are innumerable canvases for us to showcase our work, in turn reaching wider audiences. The possibility of something created in my studio having an impact on people across the world, from different walks of life is definitely a driving force for me. I definitely believe I have something to keep adding to the world and the idea of achieving that consistently is exciting.
प्रियांका सचदेव ही कलाकार, चित्रकर्ती आणि दृश्य कथाकार म्हणजेच ‘व्हिज्युअल स्टोरीटेलर’ आहे. तिच्या कलेला शैलीच्या मर्यादा नाहीत. कागद-पेन-कुंचला ते डिजिटल अशा सगळ्या माध्यमांतून ती तेवढ्याच सहजपणे काम करते. ‘टेक्स्टाईल डिझाईन’ या विषयात पदवी घेतल्यानंतर ‘लंडन कॉलेज ऑफ कम्युनिकेशन’ मधुन तिने ‘मास्टर्स इन इलस्ट्रेशन’ पूर्ण केलं. त्यानंतर ‘क्वर्क बॉक्स डिझाईन स्टुडिओ’ या तिच्या कंपनीमार्फत कलाक्षेत्रात ती काम करते. कलेचा आत्मा लाभलेलं एक ‘फॅशन लेबल’ अशी ‘क्वर्क बॉक्स’ या ब्रँडची ओळख आहे. क्वर्क बॉक्स या नावानं आपला ठसा थेट ‘लॅक्मे फॅशन वीक’ मध्येही उमटवलाय. भारतीय दंतकथांमधल्या अनेक व्यक्तीमत्वांच्या जादूई चित्र आणि गोष्टींनी तिचं काम सजलेलं असतं. या व्यक्ती आणि चित्रांना जागतिक व्यासपीठावर स्थान मिळवून देण्याच्या ध्यासानं प्रियांका काम करते. तिची प्रगल्भता आणि कामात तिचं झोकून देणं हे कमालीचं आश्वासक आहे. म्हणुनच #9women9days या आमच्या नवरात्र विशेष मालिकेत प्रियांका सचदेव सारख्या कलायात्रीचा समावेश करताना आम्हाला मनापासून आनंद होतोय!
मी कशासाठी ओळखली जाते?
कल्पक कलाकार, प्रशासकीय कामाला चोख आणि अष्टावधानी काम करणं ही माझी ओळख आहे. वैयिक्तक आणि व्यावसायिक आघाड्यांवर काम करताना मी काटेकोर आहे, पर्फेक्शनिस्ट! माझ्या बरोबर काम करणाऱया सगळ्यांना माझी तपिशलात जाऊन काम करण्याची सवय माहिती आहे. तसं केलं तरच कुठलंही काम पर्फेक्ट होतं. ते तसं व्हावं यासाठी कोणतीही तडजोड नको, हा माझा आग्रह असतो. हा माझा गुण म्हणा की दोष, पण जे करायचंय ते अत्यंत चिकित्सकपणे जीव ओतून केल्याशिवाय माझं समाधान होत नाही.
पॅंडेमिकने काय विसरायला लावलं?
कोविड पँडेमिक ही अख्ख्या जगाला एका क्षणात आहे तिथे आहे तसं थांबवणारी, कित्येक जन्मांमध्ये एकदाच घडणारी घटना असावी. अर्थकारण बिघडलं, उद्योग बुडाले, असंख्य निरपराध माणसं गेली. एका अर्थानं या परिस्थितीने आपल्या सगळ्यांनाच आपल्या जगण्याकडे पहाण्याची दृष्टी बदलायला शिकवलं. आपली ध्येय आणि प्राधान्यक्रम यांचा नव्याने विचार करायला शिकवलं. त्याची किंमत शिकवली. आयुष्य किती क्षणभंगुर आहे, काळ कसा कुणासाठी थांबत नाही ते दाखवुन देत बदल स्विकारण्याचा एक नवा धडा या आपत्तीने दिला. माणसं भौगोलिक आणि शारिरीक अंतरांचा अडथळा पार करत किती गोष्टी साध्य करु शकतात त्याची चुणूकही या पँडेमिकने दाखवली.
माझे मार्गदर्शक, सल्लागार?
मी ज्या प्रकारचं काम करते त्यात अनेक शैली आणि विषयांचा आंतर्भाव असतो. ‘क्वर्क बॉक्स’ मध्ये आम्ही करत असलेलं दृश्य चित्रकलेचं काम ते पुराणकथांचा माझ्या वैयक्तिक कामावर असलेला प्रभाव या गोष्टी मला खुप शिकवतात. आपल्या कामाचा भाग म्हणून ज्या प्रकारच्या माणसांशी आणि कलांशी आपला संपर्क येतो, ते सगळेच आपल्या वाढीवर, घडण्यावर प्रभाव टाकतात असं मला वाटतं. माझ्या आईवडिलांनी मी अगदी लहान असतानाच भारतीय दंतकथा या एका अद्भुतरम्य जगाशी माझी ओळख करुन दिली. मी जे जे करायला घेतलं त्यात त्यांचा पाठिंबा आणि सोबत नेहमी मला लाभली. मी जे करेन ते अधिक उत्तम व्हावं यासाठी त्यांनी नेहमी प्रोत्साहन दिलं. मी एक भरतनाट्यम् नृत्यांगनाही आहे. भारतीय दंतकथा एक नृत्यांगना म्हणूनही मी जगले आहे. या दोन्हींचा अत्यंत सकारात्मक परिणाम माझ्या जगण्यावर आहे. ‘क्वर्क बॉक्स’ मध्ये माझा नवरा जयेश मला नेहमी प्रेरणा देतो. कलाकार, व्यावसायिक म्हणून माझ्या प्रत्येक कामावर त्याचा प्रभाव आहे. त्याची चिकाटी, लवचिकपणा, प्रामाणिकपणे बदलाना सामोरं जात उत्तम काम करण्याची प्रवृत्ती मला ऊर्जा देते. कुठल्याही टप्प्यावर शिकवणारी, सोबत करणारी आणि प्रेरणा देणारी अशी माणसं असतील तर आपण खरोखर भाग्यवान असतो.
चालत राहण्याची प्रेरणा कशातून मिळते?
कलात्मक कामाच्या क्षेत्रात स्काय इज द लिमिट हे शब्दशः खरं आहे. त्यात डावं उजवं काही नाही. कलाकार म्हणून तुमच्या क्षमतांना पूर्णविराम नसतो. कलेच्या क्षेत्रातल्या अमर्याद शक्यता मला भुरळ घालतात. ‘क्वर्क बॉक्स’ मध्ये ‘आर्ट लेबल’ ही आमची ओळख कटाक्षाने जपण्याचा आमचा प्रयत्न असतो. ब्रँड, फॅशन, लाईफस्टाईल, इंटिरिअर अशा अनेक विभागांमधलं आमचं काम हे आम्ही आमची कला चितारण्यासाठीचा कॅनव्हास मानतो. माध्यम किंवा परिणाम यावर निर्बंध नसतील तर असे असंख्य कॅनव्हास जगभरातल्या माणसांच्या जगण्यावर परिणाम करणारे अनेक कॅनव्हास उपलब्ध आहेत, हा विचार मला काम करायचं बळ देतो. देण्यासारखं आपल्याकडे प्रचंड आहे, त्यामुळेच ते साध्य करण्याचा प्रवास हा उत्साहवर्धकच असतो.
काही वर्षांपूर्वीची तरुण तू, तुला भेटली तर तिला काय सल्ला देशिल?
मी तिला सांगेन, चमत्कारांवर विश्वास ठेव. ज्या क्षेत्रात काम करायचंय त्यात भरपूर मेहनत कर. जे तुझ्यासाठी घडणार आहे ते घडेलच. तिथपर्यंच्या प्रवासाचा आनंद घे आणि स्वत:शी प्रामाणिक राहा.
